After his arrest for alleged DUI, Tiger Woods is “embarrassed and ashamed,” an insider tells PEOPLE.

“Tiger can be defensive at times but he was embarrassed and ashamed at the latest accident,” the source says.

“He wants to fix his problems. There is nobody more interested in seeing Tiger come out a winner again than Tiger,” the source adds. “He doesn’t do well with defeat and embarrassing public situations.”

Woods, 50, was arrested after crashing his Range Rover on a two-lane road near his home in Jupiter Island, Fla. on March 27.

Authorities said they found two hydrocodone pills in his pants pocket and, after issuing Woods a sobriety test, “observed several signs of impairment,” including “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and “extremely dilated” pupils, they alleged in a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

In Martin County Sheriff’s deputies’ bodycam video, obtained by PEOPLE, Woods asked, “I’m being arrested?” as he was being handcuffed, to which a police officer told him, “At this time, I do believe your normal faculties are impaired.”

En route to the Martin County jail, Woods, draped in a sheet, spent most of the ride hiccuping. At certain points, he winced and rested his head back and closed his eyes, as seen in the bodycam video.

Authorities said Woods did not consume alcohol, and he “blew triple zeroes” on a Breathalyzer test. But he allegedly refused a urinalysis, and authorities believe he was “not impaired by alcohol but possibly by medication or another substance.”

After spending several hours at the jail, Woods bonded out. He was charged with DUI with property damage, refusal to submit to a lawful urine test and careless driving.

Four days later, he broke his silence on the arrest and said he is “stepping away” to seek treatment. “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” the golfer said in a statement on March 31.

“I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery. I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods continued. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

Woods’ family, including his two children Sam and Charlie and girlfriend Vanessa Trump, are “behind him” and supporting his recovery, but they know it is a tough time for the golfer.

“People are quick to judge Tiger but he’s living through a lot of pain and has been for enough years where it has taken a toll on his quality of life in addition to his golf game,” the source tells people.

The source continues, “He is committed now to getting better, however long that takes.”
