Justin Thomas recalls Berger not letting Tiger Woods watch him play
Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger have had many great moments together during their careers, and their debut at the Presidents Cup for the United States of America in 2017 stands out.
Tiger Woods was the vice-captain of the team at the time.
In the latest episode of The Smiley Show, Justin Thomas decided to share an interesting story from the 2017 Presidents Cup.
Justin Thomas said that Berger wouldn’t let Tiger Woods watch him play golf. Berger was quite nervous about it and did not want Tiger to walk with him, saying that he needed someone else.
“The funny story that reminds me, that I just thought of when you said about him being a captain, I mean, my first experience was him as a vice captain at Liberty,“ Justin Thomas said, as quoted by The Golfing Gazette.
“He was there, and we kind of have like pods or whatever, and it’s the, the captain, vice captain, that’s with your pod, generally walks with the guys that are playing that match.
And he happened to be with Brooks, DJ, Boog (Berger) and somebody else, I can’t remember, but, Boog, I think, and Brooks were going to play.
So Tiger was out walking with them.
And Boog, he went to Stricker, somebody like that, and he’s like, ‘can somebody else walk with us?’
He’s like, ‘I don’t want Tiger to walk with us’. He’s like, ‘what do you mean?’ He said, ‘he makes me too nervous’.
We’re like, look, ‘he’s on our team’. He’s like, ‘I can’t have shots in front of him’.
And he’s like, ‘I can’t do it, I have to have somebody else’.
So we had to get a different vice captain to walk with Boog because he was so nervous to play golf around him.
Which I honestly respect the hell out.“ Thomas concluded.
Tiger Woods’ importance
In the 2017 Presidents Cup, played at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey, the United States defeated the International Team 19-11.
This story speaks volumes for how significant a figure Tiger Woods is in the world of golf and how well-liked he truly is in golf circles.
Tiger is an idol for a large number of golfers and a man most of them looked up to when they picked up a club as kids. There are divided opinions among fans, but most seem to think that Woods is the greatest ever, and his absence from the golf course has been a cause for concern for quite some time.
Fans are hoping that the 50-year-old will soon return to the golf course and show that he can still play at least at a solid level.
It will be interesting to see if Tiger will captain the American team at the Ryder Cup in two years. At the last press conference, he revealed that there have been calls from the PGA of America, but he shared that he is still not sure if he will accept such an offer, given the many commitments he has on the PGA Tour.
