Novak Djokovic entered the 2025 US Open with one clear mission — to capture his record 25th Grand Slam title.

The Serbian star breezed past Learner Tien, Cameron Norrie, and Taylor Fritz to reach the semifinals, giving fans hope that he could finally secure a major final appearance after falling short in the previous three tournaments of the year.

However, his campaign came to an abrupt halt when Carlos Alcaraz, the eventual champion, ousted him in straight sets. While the defeat itself was a major blow, it has since emerged that Djokovic’s frustrations with the US Open organizers added to his discontent during the tournament.

The scheduling decision that angered Djokovic

Australian Billie Jean King Cup captain Nicole Pratt shed light on why Djokovic was unhappy in New York. Speaking on The Tennis podcast, she revealed that an unusual scheduling choice caught the Serbian off guard.

“The schedule came out, he was first on at 11,” Pratt explained. “He’d never been first on in 15 years, let me tell you, he was not happy. He was not happy, and if you talk about managing energy levels, and he’s to the nth degree on everything, and so calculated, that would have thrown him for six.”

Novak Djokovic was placed in the first match slot of the second round, facing American Zachary Svajda at 11:30 a.m. The early start was uncharacteristic for a player accustomed to prime-time matches, especially on Arthur Ashe Stadium. For an athlete known for meticulous energy management, the unusual scheduling was seen as a disruptive factor.

Normal service resumed, but frustration lingered

After his early-round morning appearance, Djokovic returned to his familiar evening slots for the rest of the tournament. Still, the unexpected scheduling left its mark, particularly given how finely he prepares for Grand Slam matches.

Pratt also pointed to Novak Djokovic’s candid reflections after his semifinal defeat to Alcaraz, where the Serbian acknowledged the challenge of competing against the younger generation.

“It was very real, and almost humbling, right?” Pratt said. “Normally, he’s the guy holding the trophy at the end of the Grand Slam, and now he’s almost conceding the fact that there are just two guys better than him.”

What lies ahead for Novak Djokovic

Despite the setbacks, Djokovic’s hunger for success remains undiminished. With his eyes still firmly fixed on winning that elusive 25th Grand Slam, questions are being raised about whether he should consider adapting his schedule in 2026.

Pratt suggested a potential shift in his approach: “It’s interesting, because he’s played all of the Slams, but he hasn’t played the Master 1000s, and the 1000s are best of three sets. So I’d actually like to see a bit of a flip next year. If you think physically you can’t match up for five sets, play the best of three.”

For now, the 2025 US Open will be remembered not only for Novak Djokovic’s defeat but also for the rare moment where scheduling left one of the sport’s greatest champions visibly unsettled.

Future Superstar: Serena’s Ex-Mentor Says Coco Gauff Just One Step Away from Greatness

Rick Macci believes the young American has the tools to dominate women’s tennis, but insists her serve remains the key to unlocking her full potential

Coco Gauff has already achieved incredible success at just 21 years old, winning two Grand Slam titles and reaching World No. 3 in the rankings

Yet, despite her rapid rise, the American star is still being told that one major weakness could prevent her from claiming the top spot in women’s tennis.

The criticism came into sharper focus after her 2025 US Open round of 16 defeat to Naomi Osaka, where Jack Sock didn’t mince words.

“Honestly, it’s been a bit of a struggle,” the former American tennis star admitted. He added bluntly: “She’s got to find that serve.”

And now, perhaps most notably, former Serena Williams coach Rick Macci has weighed in. Macci, who famously worked with the 23-time Grand Slam champion during her early years, believes Gauff is destined for greatness if she fixes one crucial area of her game.

Sharing his perspective on X, Macci wrote: “Because Coco fights and can fly, she never says good bye. Her serve will become her best shot and she contend again for the number one spot. If she is reprogramed with the more compact explosive ATP FOREHAND, the Delray Dart will be number one in the land. @CocoGauff.”

A flaw Gauff is determined to fix

Coco gauff

Serving has been a recurring challenge for Gauff, drawing comments from coaches, analysts, and even her fellow players.

Earlier this year, she parted ways with longtime coach Matt Daly and sought the expertise of biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan and coach Jean-Christophe Faurel, both credited with helping Aryna Sabalenka fix similar issues in her game.

“I’m not gonna waste my time playing the way I don’t wanna play,” Gauff explained when addressing the coaching change.

Her struggles have not gone unnoticed. Former doubles great Rennae Stubbs criticized the lack of progress on her serve, saying on her podcast: “But my God, like her serve, I don’t understand why now she has literally two coaches. Nothing has changed on her serve… like the ball toss is so far ahead of her on the second serve.”

The numbers tell the story. Gauff has already racked up more than 320 double faults this season, something she openly admits must change.

“I know I probably won’t be ever double fault-free, but if I could get that to 2 per cent, 3 per cent, it would make a big difference in just making these matches a lot easier,” she acknowledged.

Despite the ongoing scrutiny, many in the tennis world believe Gauff‘s best days are still ahead.

Former American pro Steve Johnson recently explained on the Nothing Major Podcast how her inconsistent serve affects the rest of her game: “When a player struggles to serve consistently, as Gauff has, it places added pressure on other areas like the forehand, backhand, and movement, eventually leading to a breakdown on court.”

Rory McIlroy Novak Djokovic

Still, Johnson emphasized that she has plenty of time to make the necessary adjustments. “She’s going to figure it out. She won a slam this year, she’s still three in the world-lots of time left for her,” he said.

As for Gauff herself, she has made it clear that self-improvement is part of her identity. “For me, I just wanna get better. I’m obsessed with the process of getting better,” she said before the US Open. While she admitted that obsession can sometimes feel overwhelming, she insisted it gives her clarity about her goals.

If Macci‘s prediction holds true, then addressing her serving woes may not only help Gauff solidify her status among the elite but also pave the way for her to fulfill her destiny as the world’s best player.

‘I’m a human’ Gauff Fires Off Response to Critics Targeting Her Glam Court Presence at US Open

When it comes to Grand Slam tournaments, American tennis star Coco Gauff doesn’t mess around with her look.

The U.S. Open is the calendar finale of the Grand Slams each year, and she said that she’s planned her outfits for tournaments like this in advance.

As some questioned why she gets all glammed up – having her hair and nails done for the tournament, along with coordinated outfits – Gauff defended the choice.

As the saying goes: “Look good, play good.”

“I don’t know why it’s such a big deal what women choose to do with their on-court or off-court looks,” Gauff said in a Vogue Beauty Secrets video.

“I’m like, ‘I’m a human. Tennis is what I do, but it’s not who I am. And I like to express my way just like any other person likes to express themselves.’”

Coco Gauff added that it’s “very rare” she has all three areas of her look planned – hair, nails and outfit – but she has focused on that just as much as preparing for her opponents.

“For me, that’s just showing up on court being the best version of myself. But I definitely think if women want to do that, they should be celebrated and not persecuted for it,” Gauff said.

Gauff, who is ranked third in women’s singles at the U.S. Open, won her first two matches to move on to the third round this Saturday against No. 28 Magdalena Fręch.

During her second-round match against Croatian Donna Vekić, which ended in a straight-sets victory for Gauff, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, she sported a red New Balance top with a red band around her waist, accompanied by a white skirt. She also had on a maroon headband and arm band during the match.

It was the same look she had in her first-round match against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic.

Gauff is hoping she can show off her style with another U.S. Open win, having collected the women’s singles title in 2023. She also won the French Open this year – another Grand Slam on the schedule.

Maria Sharapova says she went “a full-circle moment” with Serena Williams after watching the American tennis legend play, compete against her, and then have her introduce her into the Tennis Hall of Fame.

Although Sharapova and Williams are well-retired, they stole the headlines just before the start of the US Open. August 23rd was the date of the Russian tennis icon’s induction into the Hall of Fame. And there wasn’t anything surprising about it until the former five-time Grand Slam champion showed up to the ceremony alongside one of her biggest rivals – against whom she had quite a history.

“That was a full-circle moment. It started when I was a young girl watching her play with Venus, and just being so inspired by their strength and how amazing they were at their craft. Then facing Serena for so many years and now having her accepting and inducting me into the Hall of Fame,” Sharapova told Travel and Leisure magazine.

Williams issues a powerful statement on her fierce rivalry with Sharapova

Williams and Sharapova’s rivalry was never only on the court. For many years, it was an open secret that the two didn’t like each other as individuals. But after they retired from pro tennis, their tone started changing, and after they spoke briefly at the Met Gala a few years ago, they started being in touch. And all of that led to their relationship doing a complete turnaround.

“Maria and I were once the fiercest of rivals, we had our differences—to the world, we looked miles and miles apart. But the truth is, we weren’t. We wanted the exact same thing, at the exact time: to be the very best. That’s what made our rivalry so electric, and so iconic,” Williams said of her rivalry with Sharapova.

In Newport, Sharapova revealed that she reached out to Williams a couple of months ago with the Hall of Fame ceremony request, and that the American quickly agreed.

Serena Williams goes viral with jealous reaction to her sister Venus replacing her with new doubles partner at US Open

Serena Williams has broken her silence on her older sister Venus Williams entering a Grand Slam tennis tournament with a doubles partner that is not her with a viral TikTok video.

Venus, 45, has advanced to the third round of the US Open’s women’s doubles’ tournament alongside new partner, Leylah Fernandez.

During Venus’ tennis renaissance over this summer, she has found new ways to keep her career going, despite Serena hanging up her racket for the final time after the 2022 US Open.

Serena’s first statements on Venus’ team-up shows the retired legend watching her doubles’ match, jokingly rolling her eyes and putting on a few fake smiles.

Serena’s TikTok appears to poke fun at her older sister continuing in her home major. In reality, the Williams sisters have always been close, with Venus having a new partner not negatively affecting her 43-year-old sibling at all.

Fernandez and Williams have already qualified for the third round of the women’s doubles draw, four victories away from a championship.

The Williams sisters won 14 career doubles titles together, including twice at the US Open in 1999 and 2009.

In the singles’ bracket, Williams fell in three sets to Karolina Muchova, nearly defeating the No 11 player in the world despite her age.

A third-round opponent for Williams and Fernandez was determined on Sunday, with Ekaterina Alexandrova and Shuai Zhang advancing in a tight battle with the United Kingdom duo of Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal.

The elder Williams has not appeared in a Grand Slam final in any capacity since the 2017 singles championship match at Wimbledon. That day, she lost to Garbine Muguruza.

Now, with Serena’s approval, it appears Venus has more momentum than in the last several years to buck that trend.

Irked Novak Djokovic complains about US Open crowd, gets short response

Novak Djokovic got annoyed with the US Open crowd but also with chair umpire Damien Dumusois as the Serb stopped play at one point and bluntly asked the umpire what he was going to do about the noisy crowd.

On Tuesday evening, Djokovic made a positive start after taking the opening two sets of his US Open quarterfinal match No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz. With the home player down by two sets, the crowd intensified their support – and at 40/40 in the fourth game of the third set – the seventh-seeded Serb hit a double fault, which gave the American a break point. The crowd very loudly celebrated the Serb’s double fault and it didn’t sit well with the 38-year-old at all.

“What are you going to do? All you say is thank you, please, thank you please,” an irked Djokovic told umpire Dumusois.

Dumusois seemingly understood the record 24-time Grand Slam champion’s frustration, but pretty much told him to let it go.

“It’s not gonna help Novak,” the umpire responded.

Djokovic lost the set after the incident but still won the match

When the play resumed, Fritz hit a winner to convert his break point and go 3-1 up in the third set before ultimately sealing it. However, Djokovic bounced back in the fourth set and completed a 6-3 7-5 3-6 6-4 win. Later, the four-time US Open champion admitted it was all but an easy match.

“Incredibly close match. It was really anybody’s match. I thought I was lucky to save some crucial break points in the second set. I think for most of the second and third set, he was a better player. In these kind of matches, a few points decide the winner,” the Serb reflected.

Venus Williams has special message for Serena after reaching US Open doubles QF

Venus Williams had a special message for Serena after reaching the US Open women’s doubles quarterfinal with Leylah Fernandez, telling her younger sister she “needs” her to show up for her next match.

After Venus exited the US Open singles event in the first round, it was revealed that she wouldn’t leave New York yet after accepting a doubles wildcard with Fernandez. Since then, the 45-year-old American and the 22-year-old Canadian have been the best story of this year’s doubles event at Flushing Meadows as they upset No. 6 seeds Lyudymila Kichenok and Ellen Perez, defeated Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi, before also sending home 12th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai.

Following a 6-3 6-4 win over Alexandrova and Zhang, Venus revealed that she and Fernandez received some pre-match tips by Serena.

Venus Williams: Serena gets so excited and nervous watching

According to the 45-year-old former world No. 1, her younger sister has been following her matches fully locked in.

“She gave me a pep talk and made sure to call me today. I was, like, ‘You’re right. I got it. I got it.’ She’s definitely coaching from afar. She’s so excited. She gets so nervous watching, and she’s got the kids watching. They’re all at home, just really on our side,” Venus shared.

For a place in the US Open doubles semifinal, Williams and Fernandez will take on No. 1 seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.

Emotional: Tearful US Open legend Chris Evert ‘feels like Coco Gauff’ after emotional 50-year anniversary tribute

The tears have been flowing in Flushing Meadows at this year’s US Open, and it’s not just Coco Gauff. Another former champion, current announcer Chris Evert, wept on Monday as ESPN celebrated the 50th anniversary of her first US Open title — a three-set victory over Australia’s Evonne Goolagong at the tournament’s former venue in Forrest Hills, Queens.

But after watching video footage of Billie Jean King, Patrick McEnroe and others fawning over her illustrious career, as well as her 1975 win over Goolagong, Evert couldn’t hold back the tears any longer.

‘I feel like Coco Gauff right now,’ she said. ‘I’m sorry.’

Now one year older than Evert was when she won her first open a half century ago, Gauff has had an emotional run at this year’s tournament, which ended with Monday’s two-set loss to Japan’s Naomi Osaka. The third-seeded women’s player and 2023 champion has been retooling her serve, and amid that frustration, she wept both during and after her second-round win over Donna Vekic.

Not everyone was happy about the announcer’s joke, including one X user who wrote: ‘espn did a whole tribute to chris evert and at the end the first thing she did was take a shot at coco gauff.’

Aside from the joke, the moment was an emotional one for Evert, who announced in 2023 that she is once again battling ovarian cancer. She was previously cured of the disease in 2022 years after it claimed the life of her sister, Jeanne.

‘She’s one of my favorite all the human beings,’ King said of Evert in the video tribute.

‘There was something extremely relatable,’ added rival Martina Navratilova. ‘She brought new fans to the game and made little girls and boys think “Oh, I think I can do this. I can follow in those footsteps.”‘

‘The attention you brought to the sport however made me want to be a tennis player and thankfully I became one,’ he told Evert. ‘And finally, like millions of other young boys I wanted to marry you, I admit it.’

Of course, it was McEnroe’s rival Jimmy Connors who won Evert’s heart. The two became engaged, although the marriage was quickly called off and the two tennis legends went their separate ways.

‘Then you got engaged to Jimmy Connors,’ McEnroe continued as his co-hosts laughed. ‘I hated that. If I ever play that guy, going to beat his ass. Chrissie, I love you, congrats. Glad I can call you a friend.

Roger Federer’s Silent Power Play-Tennis Star Joins Cristiano Ronaldo in Billionaire Athletes’ Circle Few Could Ever Reach

Roger Federer hasn’t played professionally for almost three years, but the tennis legend continues to make headlines.

The Swiss superstar, arguably the greatest male player in history, now has another accolade to his ever-growing list: being a billionaire.

According to Forbes, the 44-year-old has joined the 10-figure club with a net worth of $1.1billion (£813million).

The publication attributes that wealth to his significant minority stake, estimated at three per cent, in Swiss shoe and apparel brand On – who he has been affiliated with since 2019

On went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 and now has a market capitalisation of nearly $15bn (£11.1bn), with Federer’s equity worth more than $375m (£277.3m).

On’s roster of tennis stars include six-time grand slam winner Iga Swiatek, men’s world No 6 Ben Shelton and teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca.

Serena Williams

During his playing days, where he won 103 tournaments over a 24-year career, Federer earned nearly $131m (£97m) in prize money and made around $1bn (£739m) in pre-tax off-court earnings via multiple sponsorship deals.

That included $150m (£110m) from Nike over two decades to wear their apparel. He left them in 2018, after 24 years, to sign for Japanese brand Uniqlo in a 10-year deal worth $300m (£228m).

However, Uniqlo don’t make footwear, allowing Federer to start his relationship with Zurich-based On. The rest is now history.

Aside from his apparel and footwear deals, he has long-standing sponsorships including Lindt, Mercedes-Benz, Rolex and Moet & Chandon.

All of his off-court income allowed him to become the world’s highest-paid tennis player for 16-consecutive years. Furthermore, in 2020 he was the highest-earning sportsperson with a then-$106.3m (£78.6m) estimated pre-tax.

Novak Djokovic Serena Williams

The feat for Federer means he joins the rarefied air of becoming only the eighth athlete to become a billionaire.

Fellow former tennis player Ion Tiriac ($2.7bn – £2bn) became the first to hit 10-monetary figures in 2007 when he began investing in real estate, car dealerships and financial services.

Basketball icon Michael Jordan followed seven years later with the six-time NBA champion now estimated to be worth $3.8bn (£2.8bn).
