Oleksandr Usyk hit with major demand from boxing personality amid heavyweight title absence

Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has been urged to make up his mind on his future as titleholder, in rather quick fashion, too.

Receiving a sizable update on his immediate fighting future earlier this week, unbeaten megastar Oleksandr Usyk was granted an extension by the WBO in his bid to thrash out a deal on his return to the ring.

And ordered to defend his championships against the WBO mandatory number one in his comeback, a niggling back injury has put Usyk’s planned fight with Joseph Parker on the back burner already.

But with his future now somewhat clearer, the Ukrainian star has been issued an ultimatum by a veteran boxing analyst today.

Oleksandr Usyk urged to fight or give up his titles

A former undisputed cruiserweight champion, too, Usyk gave up his belts willingly ahead of a planned heavyweight move back in 2019.

And once more unifying all the heavyweight titles earlier this summer with his stunning knockout of Daniel Dubois in their rematch, Usyk made divisional history once more.

However, with his latest injury setback calling into question his longevity in the division, Usyk has been urged to either take on Parker or unbeaten knockout star Fabio Wardley next — as ordered — or just vacate his crowns.

“Who am I to medically assess Oleksandr Usyk?” Gareth A. Davies told IFL TV. “Listen, I think he’s buying time, that’s my view, to assess the whole scenario [at heavyweight], because he doesn’t wanna get back in there right away.

“If you don’t wanna defend the belts, give them up,” Davies continued. …In deep technical terms, maybe he needs to relinquish a belt.”

If Usyk is to lose his status as heavyweight champion before too long, it would not come as a surprise given the Ukrainian’s recent spat with governing bodies.

Oleksandr Usyk’s previous vacating of IBF crown

First making history last year, Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years, following in the footsteps of the iconic Lennox Lewis with his first of two fights with then-WBC champion Tyson Fury.

Defeating the Morecambe native in back-to-back decision victories, Usyk would win and then defend the undisputed heavyweight belts.

However, after his second win over Fury, Usyk vacated his IBF championship, unable to meet the deadline to face the governing body’s mandatory challenger.

Going on to rematch British starlet Dubois earlier this summer after his title victory against common foe Anthony Joshua, Usyk launched a savage knockout to cement himself as undisputed gold holder again.

Oleksandr Usyk is edging towards the end of what has been a remarkable career in boxing.

The Ukrainian southpaw is 38-years-old and in just 24 professional fights has pretty much completed the sport. After turning over following his Olympic gold medal, he cleaned out the cruiserweight division to become undisputed, then moved up to heavyweight.

Usyk soon settled in with a win over Derek Chisora, and has since gone on an unbelievable run of wins, with two each over Anthony Joshua, Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury.

Oleksandr Usyk Targeting Unlikely Opponent For Final Fight

JUST IN: Terence Crawford Might Walk Away From The Super Middleweight

That has made him an unprecedented two-time undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era, and he has never been down legitimately, nor ever really looked hurt.

Usyk has admitted he has only one or two fights left, and has so far shown little interest in one of those being his WBO mandatory challenger, Joseph Parker.

Instead, speaking to Fruity King, Director of Team Usyk, Sergey Lapin, said that the champ might make a debut in MMA next year and take on a much-talked-about American.

“Jake Paul and his team are playing boxing right now. Then we’ll see. I think next year we might play with them in MMA.”

YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul has fought and beaten the likes of Mike Tyson and Julio César Chávez Jr. with one loss against Tommy Fury on his way to 12 wins from 13 fights in the squared circle.

Next up he takes on Gervonta Davis in November, but he has long chased a fight with Usyk, and it seems as though he could now get his man in the most unlikely of settings.

Oleksandr Usyk has been granted a 90-day extension to negotiate his mandatory defence against Joseph Parker on medical grounds.

The Ukrainian was initially afforded more time due to a lingering back injury, but after a video emerged online of the undisputed heavyweight champion dancing, an investigation was launched.

The WBO demanded an updated medical prognosis from Team Usyk, and they were satisfied with the evidence they received.

If Usyk had been found to be unnecessarily delaying his mandatory obligation, then the WBO would have been within its rights to strip him of his red and gold strap.

However, the 38-year-old will remain WBO heavyweight champion while Parker squares off against Fabio Wardley on October 25 in London.

“Team Usyk’s petition for a 90-day extension is granted on medical grounds,” read a letter addressed to Usyk and Parker’s respective teams from the Chairman of the WBO Championship Committee, Luis Batista Salas.

“The 90-day extension shall have a retroactive effect from the date of submission, August 9, 2025.

“Mr. Joseph Parker, Interim Heavyweight Champion, is authorized to defend his interim title against a suitable opponent approved by this Committee, during the extension period.

“Mr. Oleksandr Usyk shall be mandated to face next the WBO Interim Heavyweight Champion; no intervening bouts will be allowed.

“Failure by Mr. Usyk to comply with this mandate shall trigger this Committee’s intervention to proceed accordingly.

“This Resolution is final, definitive, and enforceable.”

Wardley recently got his hands on the WBA interim title after a stunning come-from-behind knockout win over Justis Huni.

Parker will defend his WBO interim title against Wardley on October 25 at London's O2 Arena

He now has the opportunity to jump the queue and land a four-belt shootout with Usyk by snatching the WBO’s version of the interim strap from Parker at the O2 Arena.

It will be no easy task, with Parker currently riding a rich vein of form.

The Kiwi rebounded from a stoppage loss to Joe Joyce in September 2022 to string together a six-fight winning streak.

His last three victories have been particularly impressive, with Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole all falling at his hands over the past 21 months.

Parker had been scheduled to challenge Daniel Dubois for the IBF world title in February.

However, the fight collapsed after Dubois fell ill.

The Auckland technician is now one win away from challenging for that belt, plus three more (WBO, WBA and WBC) against Usyk.

Oleksandr Usyk’s future as the undisputed heavyweight champion continues to hang in the balance, with all four sanctioning bodies circling their mandatories.

The pound-for-pound king has a three-way backlog of defenses to make, with the WBO, WBA, and WBC all having waited a significant amount of time to move forward.

Usyk’s obligations show no signs of concluding anytime soon, with the WBO showing considerable lenience when it comes to enforcement.

Usyk Parker mandatory

WBO
The most pressing order comes from the WBO, who have Joseph Parker as their number one contender, interim champion, and mandatory challenger.

However, Team Usyk has officially requested an extension to delay that obligation, with President Gustavo Olivieri informing WBN that a ruling will come this week. If the Committee grants the exception, Usyk would avoid losing his belt, and Parker would have to wait.

The move could also allow a wild card, such as teenage phenom Moses Itauma, to come into play for Usyk’s next defense. The WBO has also made it clear there is no possible scenario for the title to become vacant at this stage, despite speculation from WBN that the WBO could strip the champion.

WBA
On the WBA side, things are equally congested. Kubrat Pulev holds the regular title, while Fabio Wardley carries the interim strap and Michael Hunter the ‘gold’ belt.

In theory, the WBA should mirror the decision if the WBO grants an exception, meaning Usyk would be allowed to retain all four belts. However, after two Tyson Fury clashes and a three-time undisputed triumph against Daniel Dubois, the wait for Pulev, Wardley, and fellow contender Agit Kabayel shows no sign of easing.

Pulev vs Hunter is locked in a battle despite Don King ordering an October 4 date. Pulev’s side wants out of the order after Hunter tried to face Jarrell Miller instead. Ultimately, Hunter lost both bouts, and it’s unclear if the American can save either.

Wardley, meanwhile, is set to face Parker on October 25, but the WBO’s decision not to strip Usyk could have a knock-on effect for the WBA version.

WBC
The WBC, meanwhile, has its own order to enforce with the ever-patient Kabayel. His mandatory obligations are still pending following Tyson Fury’s back-to-back defeats to Usyk.

A ruling for Kabayel cannot occur until the WBA resolves its mess, although President Gilberto Mendoza has taken no concrete action yet, adding to the uncertainty.

IBF
Lastly, the IBF remains in limbo with no clear number one contender. Veteran Derek Chisora sits at number two, with the top spot vacant. Until the Organization promotes someone into the pole position, there is no active mandatory hanging over Usyk from the IBF.

WBN conclusion
The picture shows a division gridlocked at the top, with all four sanctioning bodies waiting on decisions that affect one another.

By filing to keep his undisputed status rather than vacating, Usyk has effectively ruled out retirement and signaled his desire to continue as champion.

But until the WBO rules this week, Parker, Pulev, Wardley, Kabayel, and Chisora are left biding their time.

A month on from Oleksandr Usyk’s destructive win over Daniel Dubois at Wembley, fans are still marveling at the Ukrainian’s achievements and debating where he sits among the all-time greats.

Two punches floored Dubois and made Usyk undisputed heavyweight champion for a second time.

The first was an overhand right that wobbled the Brit and saw him stumble to the canvas. The second — and the one that finished the fight — a left hand as flush as you will see straight on Dubois’ chin that caused his knees to buckle and sent him down again.

Take a look at the highlights from Oleksandr Usyk's spectacular knockout victory against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium.

He did not get up.

That was Round 5. Ironically, the same round that Dubois finished Anthony Joshua in their clash in September.

But, last month, Usyk took Dubois’ crown as king of Wembley Stadium.

Many ex-fighters and pundits picked Usyk to win, but as with any prediction in the heavyweight division it came with an asterisk: A fight can change in a flash with the swift swing of a KO punch. Especially with someone who hits as hard as Dubois.

However, Sergey Lapin — Usyk’s childhood best friend and CEO of Ready to Fight, the analytical team that backs the Ukrainian — says he knew exactly how things would unfold, thanks to hours of studying fights and data.

“Our analysis proved to be 200% accurate,” Lapin told ESPN. “We anticipated that Dubois would come forward in the early rounds — we understood exactly how he would behave and which punches he would try to land.”

Along with Usyk, Lapin founded Ready to Fight; a team dedicated to various endeavours in boxing. Chief among those ventures is compiling data on fighters and studying them for hours on end.

Physical attributes such as height, weight and reach and how a fighter uses them to their advantage, as well as punch and jab stats, knockout rate, what style they prefer, if they like to come forward or box more defensively are taken into account.

All of this allows Usyk’s team to find holes in their opponents and decide how they can exploit their weaknesses and gain the upper hand.

Dubois’ fights were played on a continuous loop during Usyk’s camp, with a constant stream of information being fed to those in the inner circle. Discussions around how they can expose Dubois’ weaknesses were constant.

The team then give feedback to Usyk and his trainers so they know what to work on.

“Usyk threw him [Dubois] off with his exceptional technical skills — it’s incredibly difficult to maintain attacking pressure when you simply can’t land your shots,” Lapin added.

Dubois had been vocal about “causing chaos” in the ring, as he did against Joshua. While the Brit had some early success, Usyk was too slick and grew to control the fight after Round 3.

Then, just as he had practiced and rehearsed for hours in the gym, he picked his moment to pounce. He wasn’t necessarily gunning for the knockout, but he had prepared for the opportunity to present itself.

“As for the knockout — indeed, Oleksandr had that possibility in mind,” Lapin said. “The now-famous punch with which Usyk knocked Dubois out wasn’t a coincidence; it was something he had drilled repeatedly in camp.

“But even if that opportunity hadn’t presented itself, Oleksandr had several other scenarios prepared for how to continue and successfully finish the fight.

Of course, Dubois was not a new opponent. Usyk won their first first in 2023in Round 9. The team had ample data and vision to work with.

“We’ve been familiar with Dubois for quite some time, as we had already prepared for the first fight by carefully analyzing how he behaves both in and out of the ring,” Lapin said.

“So we’ve been observing him for many years and have come to understand his tendencies well — which meant we were even better prepared this time around.”

Oleksandr Usyk yet to be granted extension to negotiations for Joseph Parker fight after sustaining an injury

Oleksandr Usyk is yet to be granted an extension to negotiations for his Joseph Parker fight, with the deadline drawing closer for the WBO title defence.

The undisputed world heavyweight champion has asked the WBO for more time to discuss the fight against mandatory challenger Parker due to an injury.

But the governing body has confirmed it is yet to agree a longer negotiation period, and the 30-day deadline to reach a deal with Parker, which was set on July 24, is fast approaching.

WBO president Gustavo Olivieri told Sky Sports that the negotiation period “concludes this week”.

“Pertaining to the request submitted by Team Usyk, such is under consideration by the Championship Committee,” Olivieri added.

Serhii Lapin, director of Usyk’s team and CEO of Ready to Fight, has suggested the undisputed world champion is weighing up his options for his next fight after unifying all the major belts again following last month’s knockout win over Daniel Dubois at Wembley.

“The champion has earned the chance to let his body recover from the effects of a punishing training regime and from injuries that are often invisible to the outside world,” said Lapin.

“And, ultimately, simply to rest and spend time with his family. Most importantly: he has earned the right to choose his own future – and to take the time he needs to make that decision.”

Parker’s UK promoter Frank told Sky Sports that Usyk applied for an extension last Thursday and the New Zealander could instead fight No 1 contender Moses Itauma if the Ukrainian decides to relinquish his WBO belt.

“Whatever happens, the fact of life is Joseph Parker will either fight as champion if Usyk vacates or he will fight Usyk for the title,” said Warren.

The 20-year-old Itauma continued his swift progress towards a world title fight after his stunning stoppage of Dillian Whyte in the first round last weekend, which even led to calls for him to challenge Usyk next.

Tyson Fury makes second set of bitter remarks over Usyk

Tyson Fury has poured scorn on Oleksandr Usyk once again, making bitter remarks over their two fights despite losing decisively on both occasions.

The “Gypsy King” was beaten back-to-back by the pound-for-pound star yet refuses to admit the defeats, instead claiming Usyk is an ‘old man’ ready to be wrecked by rising forces like Moses Itauma.

Following Itauma’s devastating win over Dillian Whyte in Saudi Arabia, Fury was quick to double down on his previous comments regarding the only man to defeat him.

Doubling Down
Fury stated, “Boxing is a young man’s game, like I told Wladimir Klitschko when he was 37. It’s a young man’s game, and it waits for nobody.

“Moses Itauma will wreck all those old men out of the division: Usyk, AJ [Anthony Joshua], [Jarrell] Miller, whoever is old; [Zhilei] Zhang, Luis Ortiz.

“All these big names of the past are all spent forces.

“Even the world champion now, who they gave my belts to, Usyk, Moses will wreck him because it’s a young man versus an old man and old men can’t mess with young men.”

After Usyk turned back Daniel Dubois for the second time in July, Fury refused to give the formidable Ukrainian any props at the time.

“Congratulations to both men, but Usyk knows there is only one man who can beat him. I’ve done it twice before and the world knows it.”

The Truth About the Defeats
The truth, however, is that Usyk defeated Fury cleanly, twice, leaving no doubt in the eyes of fans, pundits, or the record books.

Usyk dominated with superior skill and ring IQ, proving beyond debate who the real heavyweight champion is.

Fury’s refusal to acknowledge reality only highlights his growing disdain in defeat. Usyk remains unbeaten, undisputed, and firmly in control of the heavyweight division.

If Fury cannot admit that, that’s something he has to live with, and considering his venom towards Deontay Wilder when the American refused to take his loss in February 2020, the two-time top division ruler knows how it feels to be on the other side.

Turki Alalshikh Reveals Who He Wants Moses Itauma To Fight Next After Whyte KO Win

Moses Itauma just proved that he deserves every bit of the hype he’s gotten with a first round KO win against Dillian Whyte. The 20-year-old came out sharp and started technical. However, he soon went to work and put Whyte down and out with some powerful combinations.

Whyte played some mind games, keeping Itauma waiting during his walkout. Itauma, though, ended ‘The Body Snatcher’ with sniper precision, taking his record to 13-0-0 with 11 knockouts. He looks set to run boxing’s glory division for years to come.

The world is now Itauma’s oyster following the win. It’s hard to remember such a young prospect taking over the sport like this since Mike Tyson and fans have started campaigning for a fight between him and Oleksandr Usyk.

Turki Alalshikh wants to see Moses Itauma take on Oleksandr Usyk

The Ring has reported that Turki Alalshikh would like to see Itauma go up against Usyk next for the undisputed heavyweight title. Usyk looks set to fight Joseph Parker in his next title defense. However, Alalshikh’s stance could entirely change the landscape.

Usyk, 38, knocked out Daniel Dubois in last fight in July to become the undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time.

Fans want Moses Itauma to fight Oleksandr Usyk

Fans also want the 20-year-old Itauma to step in against the undisputed heavyweight champion immediately. One of them wrote on X (formerly Twitter):

One cautious fan, though, thinks that it’s still too soon for Itauma to step in there with a legend like Usyk.

The Usyk fight is way too soon for Itauma.. Itauma needs to go down his own path.. Would prefer if he fought someone like Parker next and worked his way up to Usyk in a few years #WhyteItauma

One thing is for certain, a star is born and Itauma’s ceiling seemingly has no bounds.

‘Don’t push the horses’ – Oleksandr Usyk’s team releases statement on Ukrainian’s future after injury setback

Oleksandr Usyk won’t be rushing back to the ring.

The Ukrainian slickster was recently ordered by the WBO to defend his undisputed heavyweight crown against interim champion Joseph Parker.

As of July 27, both sides have been given 30 days to agree upon terms before the fight goes to a purse bid.

However, Usyk has requested an extension to those negotiations in order for him to recover from a niggling injury.

Now, Usyk’s team director, Sergey Lapin, has provided a lengthy statement to Ready to Fight, outlining their stance on the Ukrainian’s next steps.

“Throughout his entire professional career, both Oleksandr Usyk and our whole team have proven that we respect all potential opponents as well as the rules that govern professional boxing,” said Lapin.

“Over the past year and a half, Usyk has accomplished a historic achievement by becoming the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion twice.

“That demanded tremendous physical and mental effort, and great sacrifice.

“The champion has earned the chance to let his body recover from the effects of a punishing training regime and from injuries that are often invisible to the outside world.

“And, ultimately, simply to rest and spend time with his family.

“Most importantly: he has earned the right to choose his own future – and to take the time he needs to make that decision.

“So, guys, don’t push the horses.”

What happens if Oleksandr Usyk refuses to fight Joseph Parker?

If Usyk chooses to fight somebody else rather than Parker, then he will be forced to vacate his WBO belt.

The Kiwi would then be upgraded from interim to full world champion.

His first defence would likely be against Moses Itauma, who is currently ranked No.1 by the major sanctioning body.

In the immediate aftermath of Itauma’s first-round knockout victory over Dillian Whyte on Saturday night, Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh called for the 20-year-old to face Usyk next.

However, Itauma’s team are keen for their man to get more rounds under his belt before jumping in at the deep end.

Jermaine Franklin, who took Whyte and Anthony Joshua the distance in 2022 and 2023, has been mentioned as a potential next opponent.

Usyk’s Secret Mission: The Champ’s Most Important Fight

Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk once again showed his deep connection to his homeland by visiting wounded members of the Ukrainian National Guard over the weekend.

The four-belt ruler, fresh from his July 19 victory over Daniel Dubois, travelled to one of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ medical centers to meet soldiers recovering from frontline injuries.

According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Usyk personally spoke with the service members in an impromptu act, thanking them for their courage and wishing them a swift recovery.

A Champion’s Mission Beyond the Ring
In a message that resonated far beyond the boxing world, Usyk told them, “What you have done and continue to do is invaluable.

“Each of you is a true hero. I wish you a speedy recovery, because Ukraine needs strong and unbreakable people.”

The three-time undisputed, two-weight champion also drew a powerful connection between sport and the battlefield, underlining the shared foundations of resilience, determination, and patriotism.

“Victories on the battlefield and in sports share a common foundation: strength of spirit, self-confidence, and love for one’s homeland,” he said.

But Usyk’s role goes further than inspiration at the bedside. Highlighting Ukraine’s voice on the international stage, Usyk recently shared time with President Zelenskyy.

The President highlighted the importance of keeping his country’s struggle visible to the broader world.

“Today, we all strive to make Ukraine’s voice strong and influential in the world, so that as many people as possible around the globe know the story of Ukraine’s fight for life.

“This is possible when, on the international stage, the efforts of politicians and diplomats are supported by Ukrainian legends known in every corner of the planet. One of them is our undisputed world champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

“We also addressed the promotion of healthy lifestyles among young people and the support and motivation of children who are actively engaged in sports.

“We are working together, for Ukraine, for freedom, for peace.”

Usyk’s Global Influence
The words underline why Usyk has become more than just a champion inside the ropes. As the only man to unify both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions in the four-belt era, his athletic legacy is already assured.

Yet his influence as a national figurehead continues to grow, extending far beyond boxing.

For Usyk, victories in the ring are only part of the fight. The most crucial mission is ensuring the world never forgets the trials, sacrifices, and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
