Rory McIlroy delivers Masters gesture at Irish Open after venting frustrations with officials

Rory McIlroy’s dramatically shifting demeanor at the K Club mirrored the unpredictable weather in Ireland on Thursday. The Masters champion delivered a pointed message to the DP World Tour and PGA Tour after his group was placed on the clock twice during the opening round of the Irish Open.

Then, fewer than two hours later, McIlroy captivated the audience on stage in the Championship Village, where he made his inaugural public appearance donning the green jacket he secured at Augusta to claim Masters champion status for the first time.

The storm clouds had cleared by that point, even though his conversation with broadcaster Shane O’Donoghue was sporadically disrupted by rainfall. 30 minutes before their question-and-answer session commenced, competition was halted on the course for 36 minutes due to lightning concerns, reports the Irish Mirror.

“Who thought of holding this outside,” McIlroy chuckled, as spectators raised hoods and opened umbrellas.

Yet nobody departed as they heard him analyze his Grand Slam accomplishment, how he pursued his ambition and his aspirations of completing the Grand Slam once more.

Regarding the Irish Open, McIlroy revealed that his mother, Rosie, derived greater joy from his 2016 victory at the K Club than from any of his major championships.

He also confessed that, aside from that single triumph, he has fallen short of expectations in his 20 years competing in the tournament.

An opening 71 indicates he has ground to makeup to position himself for contention when he begins his second round at 1pm. “Get off to a good start tomorrow, hopefully the weather sort of sorts holds and try to climb my way up the leaderboard and have a good weekend,” said McIlroy from the stage.

“But I still feel like I’m right in there. I don’t think anyone is going to really run away over the next two days so if I get out there and shoot something in the mid-60s I’ll have a great chance going into the weekend.”

Nevertheless, leaving the course earlier he had expressed annoyance that he hadn’t extracted more from a solid round. Surrendering two strokes in his final three holes didn’t assist matters and he placed the responsibility on his group being timed for sluggish play.

Yet McIlroy blamed the issue on Tour officials failing to consider the commotion that accompanies the world’s elite players with massive crowds – particularly when they’re competing on familiar territory – and the television crews required to broadcast the featured groups for live coverage.

“In all honesty, I felt a little rushed out there for the last 12 holes,” he told reporters afterwards. “We got put on the clock pretty early, and then the first official went away and then we were put on the clock for the last three holes to try to make time up.

“And it’s hard because you feel a bit rushed. You’re playing some tough holes and we obviously, our group, have to deal with a lot more than any other group on the course. So it’s understandable that we lose time.”

McIlroy suggests that Tour officials should be more understanding. He feels singled out: “I feel like any time I either come back to Europe or I play in some of these like one, two, three in the world type groups, we’re always put on the clock for that reason,” he expressed.

“So I got a little frustrated the last few holes because I feel like it always happens and I don’t think they use sort of common sense in terms of, well, of course we’re going to lose ground because we’re going to have to wait on crowds and wait on the two camera crews that are out there.

“There’s just a lot more going on with our group than any of the other groups on the course, and sometimes I feel like they have to give us a little bit of leeway and use a bit of common sense.”

Interestingly, McIlroy is known for his quick pace in the game, yet he feels unfairly targeted, confessing that he “lost my s—” with a PGA Tour official during the Players Championship earlier this year.

For instance, on the 7th hole, both Lawrence and Reitan ended up in the water. Recalling the incident, McIlroy said: “Yeah, and then obviously they’re taking their time, whatever, and I was in my mind like, ‘oh, do I just go first to try to save a bit of time here?’

“But not really, you can still wait your turn. So it wasn’t really that, I guess it was more I just felt because it’s happened to me quite a lot before in these sort of big groups who want to come back to Europe and play, I felt like I just let it agitate me a little bit.”

Serena Williams goes viral with jealous reaction to her sister Venus replacing her with new doubles partner at US Open

Serena Williams has broken her silence on her older sister Venus Williams entering a Grand Slam tennis tournament with a doubles partner that is not her with a viral TikTok video.

Venus, 45, has advanced to the third round of the US Open’s women’s doubles’ tournament alongside new partner, Leylah Fernandez.

During Venus’ tennis renaissance over this summer, she has found new ways to keep her career going, despite Serena hanging up her racket for the final time after the 2022 US Open.

Serena’s TikTok appears to poke fun at her older sister continuing in her home major. In reality, the Williams sisters have always been close, with Venus having a new partner not negatively affecting her 43-year-old sibling at all.

Fernandez and Williams have already qualified for the third round of the women’s doubles draw, four victories away from a championship.

The Williams sisters won 14 career doubles titles together, including twice at the US Open in 1999 and 2009.

In the singles’ bracket, Williams fell in three sets to Karolina Muchova, nearly defeating the No 11 player in the world despite her age.

A third-round opponent for Williams and Fernandez was determined on Sunday, with Ekaterina Alexandrova and Shuai Zhang advancing in a tight battle with the United Kingdom duo of Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal.

The elder Williams has not appeared in a Grand Slam final in any capacity since the 2017 singles championship match at Wimbledon. That day, she lost to Garbine Muguruza.

Now, with Serena’s approval, it appears Venus has more momentum than in the last several years to buck that trend.

Floyd Mayweather’s precision shocked me – I thought it was an exhibition, then he cracked me in the eye

“I wasn’t fearful of his power, but the precision was unbelievable,” Aaron Chalmers tells talkSPORT.com.

The 38-year-old from Newcastle is reflecting on a wild period of his career when he boxed Floyd Mayweather, ahead of his own return to fighting later this month.

Chalmers makes his second bare-knuckle boxing appearance on September 27 at BKFC 81 in Manchester.

The build-up to his fight with Jack Fincham has allowed ‘The Joker’ a moment to look back on how he somehow found himself face-to-face with one of boxing’s all-time greats, despite having just one professional boxing bout to his name.

Mayweather sent shockwaves through the boxing world this week when he confirmed his return to face Mike Tyson in an exhibition bout next year.

Just two years ago, however, ‘Pretty Boy’ was scheduled to fight Muay Thai specialist Liam Harrison at London’s O2 Arena in February 2023.

When Harrison was forced to withdraw from the fight with a knee injury, Mayweather needed a last-minute opponent.

That’s when Chalmers tried his hand and sent a throwaway message to an old bodyguard from his days on the popular British TV show Geordie Shore.

Five weeks later, he was sharing the ring with the undefeated, five-weight world champion, while also becoming the first man to box Mayweather on British soil.

When Aaron Chalmers felt the wrath of Floyd Mayweather

“It was a crazy experience that I grabbed with both hands,” Chalmers said, reflecting on the opportunity.

“It was f***ing amazing, an amazing week, everything about it was just mad.

“I laugh about it because people pay money to go and have a picture with Floyd when he would come and do talks.

“Then there’s me getting paid a big lump of money to fight him. It was crazy.”

Chalmers tells a story of a confused delivery driver approaching his house only to find a huge canvas depicting the Newcastle man in the ring with Mayweather.

“He thought I’d put them two pictures together! It brought a little smirk on my face,” he said.

Chalmers looks back on the experience fondly now, yet his smile was quickly wiped when Mayweather threw the first punch in their bout two years ago.

Being in the ring with Mayweather is one thing, but taking a punch from him is something else entirely, with a 59-year-old Tyson set to be in the same position soon.

“He led me into a trap in the first round,” Chalmers explains, discussing the brilliance of his opponent.

“We walked out, and I came out with my guard, and he was just [playing] with his hands.

Mayweather’s precision ‘was unbelievable’ Chalmers says

“So I thought, ‘Oh, it’s an exhibition. He just wants to play.’ I dropped my hands, and I went to touch his hand, and he just went f***ing crack and hit me straight in the eye.

“I said, ‘You dirty b******. We’re in a fight now.’ But he properly let me into a false sense.

“I thought he wasn’t taking it seriously.’ Then, as soon as he seen my hands up, he cracked me straight in the eye.

“I wouldn’t say he was powerful. I wasn’t fearful of his power, but the precision was unbelievable.

“He hit me with a body shot, I dropped my hand, and then he hit me on the head.

“I was like, ‘I’m gonna have to take another one to the head. I’m not taking another body shot — no way.’

“Because the precision was just there, and I thought, ‘I’m not taking another one of the body — no chance.’”

The bout wound up going the distance, with no official winner declared after all eight rounds.

Chalmers is now just a matter of weeks away from entering the combat world once again.

When is Chalmers fighting next?

He faces former Love Island star Fincham, who is making his debut, under the banner of Conor McGregor’s BKFC promotion on September 27.

The card is headlined by the return of former IBF super-middleweight champion James DeGale, who takes on Matt Floyd in his first professional fight since losing to Chris Eubank Jr in February 2019.

Chalmers goes into his bout with Fincham as the far more experienced competitor, having clocked a 5-2 professional MMA record since entering the sport in 2017.

While he confirms ‘yes and no’ to learning from his experiences with Mayweather, the Geordie admits he might have given his former foe too much respect in the ring.

“I feel like I was too respectful, far too respectful towards him, because of who he was,” he concluded.

“It was an exhibition, wasn’t going on any records, and looking back now, I was far, far too respectful.

“I’m not going to let that ruin what it was, but I just know looking back now, I could have given a lot, a lot more.

“But like I say… It was a five-week turnaround, and I didn’t really have time to think about it.

“I was on talkSPORT, I had Sky Sports at my house. Everything was such a whirlwind. We were trying to lose 12 kilos in five weeks.

“And then before you know it, I was in there. I was just like, ‘Well, what the f*** is going on here?

“I’m in the ring with Floyd Mayweather. It was a mad whirlwind of five weeks.”

Terence Crawford Names The Fighter Who Hit Him So Hard His ‘Body Stiffened’

Terence Crawford is over 40 fights into what has been an accomplished professional career to date.

The 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska made his debut back in 2008 and since then he has gone on to capture world titles across four weight classes, including the undisputed championship at super-lightweight and welterweight.

He boasts victories over a number of top rated fighters such as Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, Israil Madrimov and Errol Spence Jr, defeating the latter to become boxing’s first undisputed champion at 147lbs within the ‘four belt era’.

‘Bud’ is now just over one week away from the test of the highest magnitude as he gears up to challenge Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight championship on September 13 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Ahead of that fight Crawford has been speaking on the FULL SEND PODCAST, and when asked which past opponent hit him the hardest, Crawford didn’t hesitate to name Cuba’s Yuriorkis Gamboa as the one to do so, as he claims the former featherweight world champion made his body ‘feel stiff’ after catching him with big shots.

“Got to be [Yuriorkis] Gamboa … It’s just that he caught me off guard, coming in with my hands down, being cocky, things like that and he just caught me to where my whole one side of my body got stiff, so it was just like ‘boom’ he shocked me.”

Crawford stopped Gamboa in the ninth round of their world title bout at the Century Link Center in Omaha back in June 2014, making the maiden defence of his WBO world lightweight title in the process.

The Cuban last competed in April 2022, suffering a fifth round stoppage loss to Isaac Cruz to take his record to 30 wins and 5 defeats. He has since been involved in legal trouble that has kept him our of the ring.

The surprising change in Terence Crawford during Canelo camp that has shocked his own team

Moving up two weight classes as a boxer is no mean feat; maintaining a fight-ready physique and improving your athletic performance while doing so is even harder.

As a result, fans have voiced their concerns that Terence Crawford will lose his signature fluid footwork, speed and versatility as a result of the 14lb he has put on for his upcoming super middleweight clash with Canelo. But his strength and conditioning coach Chet Fortune claims the opposite is true – Bud is only getting better.

“The beauty of the situation is that we have members of our team who are not in camp [all the time] – I’m talking about people like his agent, PR team and photographers, who are only with us at certain points,” Fortune says.

“Everybody that’s seen him recently, whether he’s sparring or doing his boxing work, says it looks like he’s got more speed.”

Crawford agrees. In a promotional documentary series for the fight, he tells Netflix: “Putting on muscle doesn’t mean that you’re going to be slower. But you punch a little harder.”

Below, Fortune explains why super middleweight will suit his fighter, and why he expects to see Crawford’s arm raised come 13 September.

Why fighting at 168lb will suit Terence Crawford, according to his team

It is only natural to assume Canelo has the upper hand going into this fight as far as the weight class is concerned at least. He has been fighting at super middleweight for years, this is the body he is accustomed to using, whereas Crawford has to adapt to a physique that is largely foreign to him.

However, while Bud is now sporting broader shoulders and a more muscular upper body in general, Fortune says the extra 14lb “isn’t significant enough to slow him down”.

“I think 168lb is a natural weight for him,” he continues. “To me, he’s not sacrificing a thing. [For the fight] he’s not going to be dehydrated and he’s going to have the muscle mass we expect on his frame [rather than losing muscle in a sharp calorie cut to make weight].

“From a speed perspective, if anything, I think he looks faster at 168lb than he did when he fought at 154lb. Everybody we brought into camp has had an opportunity to see him in the ring, whether that be on the pads or the bag work or sparring, and they’ve all said the same thing: ‘How has he increased in size but still looks just as fast, if not faster?’”

Despite only recently adding mass to his frame, Crawford will not look like the smaller fighter in the ring either, according to Fortune. The pair are similar heights, they will come into the fight at the same weight, but Bud has a larger reach.

“Canelo has more experience fighting at this weight, getting hit by guys at this weight and throwing punches at guys this weight,” Fortune says. “But from a genetic standpoint, Bud’s not the smaller guy.”

Terence Crawford’s training partners past and present provide perfect preparation

Canelo may be more accustomed to fighting at super middleweight in the public eye, but Crawford has accrued plenty of experience in the ring with heavier fighters, albeit behind closed doors.

“What people don’t realise about Bud is that, naturally, his main sparring partners are 168lb or 175lb. We’ve done that for a long time,” Fortune explains.

“There’s Steven Nelson who, before he fought Pacheco, was rated in the top 10 of all four federations – he’s naturally a 215lb guy who gets down to 168lb, so he packs a lot of power.

“Then there’s a lot of other fighters like Lester Martinez. So it’s not like I felt like we needed to change a lot for Canelo.”

Nelson has also had his say on the situation, telling Fighthype: “It’s not like he’s a small guy and he’s putting on a bunch of weight – he’s always been bigger and he’s always had to cut down. The difference for this fight is he won’t have to cut down.

“He’s going to do something that nobody is expecting… He’s always had power, but now it’s a different power. He still has the speed, movement and ability – it’s crazy.”

Mike Tyson’s ice cold response after Floyd Mayweather claimed he was better than Muhammad Ali

Hall of Famers Mike Tyson and Floyd Mayweather are set to meet in the ring next year and previous comments from the former heavyweight champion may lead to a bit of needle in the exhibition bout.

The two Americans who dominated separate eras and weight divisions will come face-to-face in a non-competitive contest arranged by CSI Sports, although exact details are currently scarce.

Back in the build up to Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2015, Tyson was asked about Mayweather’s comments that he was a better fighter than Muhammad Ali.

‘Iron Mike’ immediately shut down the comparison, telling UK RBG TV: “He’s very delusional. If he was anywhere near that realm of the great Ali, he’d be able to take his kids to school.

“He can’t take his kids to school by himself, and he’s talking about he’s great? Greatness is not guarding yourself from the people, greatness is being accepted by the people.”

Mayweather retired from competitive fights in 2017 after stretching his professional record to a perfect 50-0 with victory over UFC star Conor McGregor. A five-division champion, the heaviest weight ‘Money’ fought at was super welterweight (154lbs).

Both men have taken part in high-profile exhibitions before, with Mayweather taking on wrestler Logan Paul back in 2021, while Tyson faced Roy Jones Jr a year earlier.

Mayweather, who is 11 years Tyson’s junior, also took part in an exhibition last year, a non-scored bout with John Gotti III.

During the filmed interview, Tyson’s old temper briefly flared, with the former undisputed heavyweight champion labelling Mayweather a ‘very small, scared man.’

“He can’t take his kids, alone, to school, by himself,” added Tyson. “He’s a little scared man. He’s a very small, scared man.”

Terence Crawford’s Final Physical Appearance Reveal Has Canelo Alvarez Fans Scared

After what has been months of anticipation and excitement continuing to build, the boxing world is now just eight days away from getting to see Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford meet in the ring, as their showdown is all set for Allegiant Stadium on September 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Given how great both of these boxers are and their nearly immaculate respective resumés, fans are finding anything they can to try and figure out whether Canelo or Crawford will have the edge next Saturday. Of course, many are already leaning toward Canelo, given that Crawford is moving up several weight classes to challenge him.

Because many believe this size difference will ultimately decide who wins the fight, there has been a ton of intrigue around what Crawford will weigh when he enters the ring next weekend. And in the same vein as this, fans are curious to see what Crawford looks like when he fights.

Will Crawford have the same lean, speed-focused physique he has had throughout his career, or will he elect to bulk up some so he can better compete with Canelo’s power advantage?

It seems some of these questions have now been answered.

Terence Crawford Reveals Final Physical Appearance Before Canelo Alvarez Fight

Fans no longer need to wait about how Crawford will look when fighting Canelo, as he made an Instagram post on September 5 that showed him flexing with his shirt off, which was captioned, “8️⃣ days AND WE READY‼️”.

Crawford looks absolutely shredded in the photos, which makes clear that he didn’t put on too much size for this superfight.

This photo has since been posted across various social media channels. And fans seem to be impressed with the form Crawford is showing.

“Bud Crawford will push Canelo back, be stronger on fight night, and dig to the body like no other Canelo opponent has before,” one fan wrote in an X comment in reply to Ring Magazine’s post about Crawford’s physique.

Another fan wrote, “Yea ummmm this is pretty terrifying for any Canelo fan 😳”.

“I’m praying for Canelo 🙏🏼 he don’t know what he got himself into!” a third added.

Of course, a fighter’s physique ultimately doesn’t say anything about how they will fare in a fight. But it’s clear that Crawford is taking this fight as seriously as possible and appears to be in the best shape of his life right now.

Terence Crawford Suspicious of Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis Fight

Terence Crawford has shared his detailed take on Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis which will take place on Netflix on November 14.

Paul. who last fought at cruiserweight and is ranked no. 14 in the division by the WBA, recently revealed that the contest will be at 195 lbs, 60 lbs more than Davis’ fighting weight.

Fans are keen to see how a more experienced fighter like ‘Tank’ Davis handles the weight difference, and Crawford has now shared his honest breakdown of the fight.

Terence Crawford predicts Jake Paul vs Gervonta Davis

Crawford reckons ‘The Problem Child’ is too big for Davis and can punch well, meaning the contest might be over with if Paul lands a clean shot on Davis. Speaking on the Full Send Podcast, Crawford said:

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with a 135 pounder going up against a 200 pounder, you know? If it’s scripted, then it’s going to be good for the for for the fans to watch.”

When asked if he means Paul and Davis would just go in there to spar, Crawford said, “It’s more of a business tactic than anything. That’s what Jake and Mike kind of did.”

Crawford also pointed out the dangers that Davis has to be aware of, saying, “Jake can punch with that right hand. Like I seen him, you know what I mean, up close and person like dude is big. He’s not as slow as people think he is.”

‘Bud’ Crawford claimed that both Paul and Mike Tyson held back on their punches when they fought each other last November. Crawford added, “Jake just Jake just too big. He too big. If they really go at it, he’s just too big. Tank ain’t going to be able to get in from that jab. Jake laying one good punch on on Tank. It’s over with.”

When asked if Paul vs Davis could go similar to Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul, Crawford said:

“Floyd’s experience came into play, you know, he started hitting him a little harder, started touching him to the body, you know, started making him work when he didn’t want to work.”

Is Terence Crawford right in his Gervonta Davis vs Jake Paul take?

‘Tank’ Davis is way more experienced that Paul and is exceptionally skilled. That said, there are weight classes in boxing for a reason. Paul is no longer a YouTuber turned pro-boxer but has been training in the sport for a considerable amount of time. Hence, the fight might actually turn out to be a physical mismatch even if it’s an exhibition.

Anthony Joshua offered historic fight after missing out on Jake Paul showdown

Eddie Hearn has revealed that Anthony Joshua has been offered the chance to fulfill his dream of fighting in Africa after talks with Jake Paul led nowhere.

Boxing’s latest disruptor Paul made a lot of noise about a bout with the former heavyweight world champion, with the American instead opting for an exhibition fight with compatriot Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

Joshua’s boxing career has been paused by surgery on his elbow over the summer, with his return to the ring pushed back from the end of 2025 to the start of next year.

Matchroom Boxing promoter Hearn has hinted that Joshua’s comeback fight could be hosted in Africa, following offers for an event to be staged in Ghana.

Speaking on the Flash Knockdown podcast, Hearn shared: “As the time ticks by, it’s probably more likely that we see [Joshua] in the ring again for a January/February date if I’m honest. I don’t think there’s any value in us saying it will be in December.

“He’s been travelling about a bit but he’s back in training following an elbow operation. But these big fights take time and every AJ event is a massive event. It was well publicised about the meetings that took place in Ghana over the last couple of weeks.

“There has been an offer to do a fight there and I think it would be incredible for AJ to fight in Africa. However, when you are doing site deals a lot of it depends on when the host wants to stage the show. So, if Ghana comes back and says they’d like to go in January or February, then that’s the offer.”

Matchroom CEO Frank Smith flew to Ghana in August to review the Accra Sports Stadium in the country’s capital, as well as hold talks with Ghanaian-based Legacy Sports, who have recently worked with Amir Khan in hosting events in Africa.

Capable of holding 40,000 for national team football matches, Smith remarked that the usage of the pitch could allow between ‘50,000 and 60,000’ fans to watch a Joshua fight.

Over the years Joshua has spoken about his desire to fight on the continent, with both of his parents of Nigerian descent. The Olympic gold medallist also has a tattoo showing the outline of Africa on his right arm.

As far back as 2017 Joshua told the Daily Star: “I’d like to fight in Africa. People set records and trends for others to follow and I think it would be great because Muhammad Ali did it and he’s one of the great champions we had.

“That would be class, sometime in my career. Even if it was an exhibition match – against [Wladimir] Klitschko – in 10 years’ time.”
